The Beauty of Calligraphy at Trung Vuong University’s 2024 Admissions Consultation Fair

Hanoi, March 17, 2024 – Within the framework of the 2024 Career Guidance and Admissions Consultation Fair organized by Tuoi Tre Newspaper in collaboration with the Department of Higher Education (MOET) and the General Department of Vocational Education (Ministry of Labor – Invalids and Social Affairs), Trung Vuong University contributed a touch of traditional culture – the art of calligraphy – to the fair, making its consultation booth uniquely creative.

Visitors to Trung Vuong University’s 2024 Admissions Consultation Fair not only learned about the university’s training programs and scholarship opportunities but also experienced a glimpse of traditional culture in daily life. The allure of the booth was evident in the skilled calligraphy strokes, with the calligrapher dressed in an elegant “áo dài” garment, attracting many passersby. The flowing characters gracefully emerged under the skillful hand of Mr. Nguyen Van Nguyen, a lecturer in the Foreign Languages Department at Trung Vuong University.

Despite his relatively youthful appearance, Mr. Nguyen is actually over 50 years old and has been practicing Han calligraphy for many years. Every Tet holiday, he diligently presents calligraphy at Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam. He shared, “Through self-study and learning from ancient scripts, receiving teachings from remaining Confucian scholars, and specializing in Han Nom since 1998, I have been writing Han calligraphy at Van Mieu – Quoc Tu Giam, Vietnam’s first university, to share this art with eager learners. This cultural activity gained respect and popularity, becoming an important part of the ‘1000th Anniversary of Thang Long’ commemorative activities. Today, a nationwide movement to study Han calligraphy and understand our nation’s culture and history has emerged among young people. Han calligraphy continues to hold a significant place in our national identity, promoting traditional Vietnamese values.”

Mr. Nguyen believes that integrating the cultural practice of Han calligraphy into the admissions consultation event is an innovative initiative, showcasing creativity within the academic and interdisciplinary arts environment while refining personal character. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, calligraphy captivates with its ancient charm in contemporary settings.

For Trung Vuong University, the 2024 Admissions Consultation Fair represents more than an opportunity for students and parents to explore training programs and scholarships; it’s a chance to celebrate and honor the beauty of calligraphy in everyday life.

The organizers of the fair had a visit to the university’s consultation booth.
