Explore a Hands-On Practice Day of Nursing Students in the Basic Nursing Course at TV-UNI

The station-based practical examination is an important activity designed to comprehensively assess the practical competencies of nursing students after their training in the skills laboratory. This assessment helps students reinforce their knowledge, refine professional skills, and develop a careful and precise working attitude before entering real clinical settings.

During practical sessions, students are required to sequentially perform professional techniques within a specified time frame, strictly following procedures and ensuring patient safety.

Station 1 – Gastric Lavage Technique

Students must complete all required steps, including preparing the patient, measuring the length of the tube, inserting the tube correctly, checking whether the tube has reached the stomach, and performing gastric lavage according to protocol. This technique demands meticulousness, calmness, and the ability to handle situations that may arise during the procedure.

Station 2 – Deep Intramuscular Injection Technique

At this station, students must adhere to the “3 checks – 5 rights,” accurately identify the safe gluteal injection site, choose the appropriate injection angle, and administer the correct dosage. Examiners focus on aseptic technique, accuracy in locating the injection site, and the ability to ensure patient safety.

Station 3 – Wound Cleaning and Dressing Technique

This station requires students to follow a strict aseptic procedure: assessing the wound condition, cleaning the wound using proper techniques, using appropriate instruments, and applying a clean and secure dressing. It evaluates students’ dexterity, carefulness, and infection-control skills.

Station 4 – Intravenous Infusion Technique

Students must carry out all steps from preparing the patient and equipment, checking medications, setting up the infusion system, disinfecting and inserting the needle correctly, to adjusting the infusion rate and monitoring the patient. This technique requires precise, decisive actions and a serious professional attitude.

In addition to the practical component, students who complete their stations early will participate in an oral examination related to the technique they have just performed. This section assesses their in-depth understanding and ability to apply knowledge in simulated clinical situations.

The station-based examination is not only a skills assessment but also an opportunity for nursing students to develop professional demeanor, confidence, and a strong sense of responsibility—key qualities for becoming competent nurses in the future. We wish all nursing students strong morale, confidence in demonstrating their abilities, and excellent performance in the upcoming station-based examination. May you achieve high results and move ever closer to the image of a professional nurse in the future!
