“Those who do not know their nation’s history are like those who do not know where they came from.”
This famous saying is one that every Vietnamese should remember, especially as we reflect on the 50-year journey since the historic victory on April 30, 1975 – a brilliant milestone in the nation’s history.
History – The Foundation of the Present and Future
It’s no coincidence that the saying “If you don’t know history, you know nothing” has become a universal truth. History is not merely a collection of dates, numbers, and past events; it is a guiding light for our journey forward. By learning history, we understand our national identity, the values forged over thousands of years, and, more importantly, why we stand where we are today.
Students at Truong Vuong University deeply embrace this philosophy. Nguyen Tien Hoang, a second-year student, shared: “We are taught that understanding history is not just about knowing events, but about understanding the soul of the nation. Particularly, the event of April 30, 1975, teaches us about the power of will and patriotism.”
The Journey to the Great Victory – An Eternal Epic
The resistance war against America was not merely a military struggle, but a comprehensive fight across military, political, and diplomatic fronts. It was a challenging journey, filled with hardships and obstacles.
Fateful Turning Points
Following the Geneva Accords in 1954, the country was temporarily divided into two regions. The struggle for national reunification took place amidst a complicated international landscape, with Vietnam becoming a focal point of the Cold War.
In 1960, the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam was founded, marking a new phase in the revolutionary movement in the South. The 1968 Tet Offensive became a major turning point, forcing the U.S. to enter negotiations in Paris.
The signing of the Paris Peace Accords in 1973 paved the way for the final stage of the resistance. Ultimately, the historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign culminated in the momentous day of April 30, 1975, ending American military presence in Vietnam and achieving the full liberation and reunification of the country.
The Power of Will and Unity
The victory of the resistance war against America was not a stroke of luck or coincidence but the inevitable result of the Vietnamese people’s indomitable will, solidarity, and burning patriotism. It was the triumph of a small nation, geographically, yet spiritually immense, against the world’s mightiest superpower at the time.
The Young Generation of Truong Vuong University – Continuing the Revolutionary Ideals
At Truong Vuong University, the spirit of April 30 is always cherished and promoted. Students do not merely study history through lectures; they embody it through practical activities, living and acting according to the revolutionary ideals of earlier generations.
The university’s Youth Union has organized many meaningful activities to deepen students’ understanding of the nation’s liberation struggle. Exhibitions showcasing books about April 30 have provided students with a more vivid and comprehensive view of the past.
Today, as the country advances rapidly, understanding and valuing history has become even more crucial. Only by knowing history can students fully appreciate the value of the present and possess the strength and resilience needed to stride confidently into the future.
For students at Truong Vuong University, this is expressed through the motto: “Study – Create – Aspire to Contribute.”
They not only strive academically to become talented young individuals but also always remember their responsibility to the nation and their people.
“We constantly remind each other that today’s achievements are built upon the sacrifices and struggles of previous generations. Therefore, we must study and train hard to be worthy of those sacrifices,” shared Yen Nhi, a first-year student in the Faculty of Communications.
Dr. Nguyen Huy Oanh, President of the University, stated: “We do not only teach students about history; we help them understand their role in continuing and promoting the nation’s traditions. ‘If you don’t know history, you know nothing’ – that is the message we always strive to instill in them.”
On the ongoing journey of national development, students of Truong Vuong University are proud to contribute to building a prosperous Vietnam, honoring the sacrifices of the generations who came before. The young generation of Truong Vuong University is, and will continue to be, worthy successors, writing new glorious chapters in the history of the nation.
