Meet Dr. Đàm Đức Hoan – A Teacher Bridging the Sea and the Classroom, Inspiring Gen Z with the Spirit of “Love the Law, Understand the Law”

In the quiet atmosphere of Trưng Vương University’s office, we had the opportunity to meet and talk with Dr. Đàm Đức Hoan – a dedicated teacher whose remarkable journey spans from defending maritime sovereignty to imparting legal knowledge to the younger generation.

From the Sea to the Classroom

Dr. Đàm Đức Hoan, former Director of the Training and Professional Development Center for the Vietnam Coast Guard under the Vietnam Coast Guard Command, is currently the Head of the Law Department at Trưng Vương University. With a unique career trajectory, he has transitioned from safeguarding the nation’s maritime sovereignty to teaching law on shore.

“Switching from a law enforcement environment at sea to an academic one was not an easy decision,” Dr. Hoan shared with a warm smile. “But I realized that teaching legal knowledge to the younger generation is also a way of serving the country—protecting it through knowledge and legal awareness.”

Economic Law in the New Era

When asked about Economic Law—a field gaining increasing attention in the context of global integration—Dr. Hoan offered profound insights:

“Economic Law is not just about memorizing legal provisions. It’s an art of blending economic understanding with the ability to apply the law in regulating economic relations within society. In this era of digitalization and globalization, students of Economic Law need multidimensional thinking, technological literacy, and the agility to adapt to market changes.”

According to Dr. Hoan, the field of Economic Law requires students to have a solid foundation in both economics and law, along with the ability to think analytically, logically, and communicate effectively.

Gen Z Law Students: Challenges and Opportunities

Speaking about Gen Z—the current generation of students—Dr. Hoan shared his observations:

“Gen Z grew up with digital technology. They have the advantage of quick information access, creative thinking, and a willingness to embrace change. However, their biggest challenge lies in cultivating patience and deep focus—both of which are critical for studying law.”

He added about his teaching methods tailored for Gen Z: “I often blend theory with practice, use real-life case studies, and invite industry experts to share their experiences. The key is to create an interactive learning environment that encourages students to ask questions and engage in debates.”

Advice for Law Students

When asked for advice to law students, Dr. Hoan emphasized:

“Studying law is not just about passing exams. It’s about understanding that as a lawyer, legal officer, or anyone in the legal field, you have a responsibility to society. Learn with the mindset of serving the community, with the awareness that your legal knowledge will be used to protect justice and the rights of the people.”

He also encourages students to gain practical experience by participating in activities such as free legal consultation services or internships at legal organizations.

The Future of the Legal Profession

Looking ahead, Dr. Hoan believes that the legal profession will undergo many positive changes: “Technologies like AI, blockchain, and fintech are creating new challenges for the law. This means that law students must continuously learn and update their knowledge. However, no matter how advanced technology becomes, the human element—with its capacity for critical thinking, judgment, and a sense of justice—will always be at the core of the legal profession.”

Our conversation with Dr. Đàm Đức Hoan left a deep impression of a teacher who is not only highly knowledgeable but also passionate about his profession and dedicated to his students. From defending the nation’s maritime sovereignty to teaching law in the classroom, he has proven that no matter the role, serving the country and its people remains the top priority.

With his valuable insights into Economic Law and an educational approach tailored to Gen Z, Dr. Hoan is not just a lecturer but a guide and source of inspiration for the future generation of legal professionals in Vietnam.
