Vietnam’s Automobile Market Warms Up: Opportunities and Challenges for Automotive Engineering Technology

After a prolonged period of stagnation, Vietnam’s automobile market has shown signs of recovery in recent months. A series of car manufacturers have continuously rolled out aggressive promotional campaigns, with common discounts ranging from VND 30–100 million, and in some cases up to VND 150–200 million per vehicle. These moves are seen as demand-stimulating efforts in response to the weakened purchasing power since last year. However, despite prices being at their most attractive level in the past two years, the market has yet to witness the strong breakthrough that many had expected.

Consumer Caution and the Impact of Tax Policies

One of the key reasons many customers remain hesitant lies in information surrounding the proposed reduction of the Special Consumption Tax (SCT) on domestically manufactured and assembled vehicles. If this policy is enacted, car prices could fall by an additional 5–12%, equivalent to around VND 50–120 million depending on the model.

This prospect has created a “wait-and-see” mentality, leading many consumers to postpone purchasing decisions. In addition, macroeconomic fluctuations, personal financial constraints, and relatively high car-loan interest rates continue to make car ownership a decision that requires careful consideration.

As a result, although incentives are unprecedented, consumer behavior is still heavily influenced by expectations around tax policies and personal financial factors.

Automobile Businesses Under Heavy Inventory Pressure

Inventory has been a prominent issue in the automotive industry over the past year. Many models—particularly in the sedan and compact SUV segments—have accumulated large stock volumes due to declining demand. This situation has forced manufacturers and dealers to significantly cut prices, even at the expense of profit margins, in order to accelerate inventory turnover.

Moreover, increasingly fierce competition among brands—both domestic and imported—has resulted in continuous price-cutting campaigns. This explains why, despite lower vehicle prices, purchasing demand has been slow to rebound, as consumers expect prices to continue falling.

Overall, this creates a landscape of both challenges and opportunities: while the market needs time to fully recover, it simultaneously opens up strong demand for high-quality human resources to support the industry.

Growing Demand for Automotive Human Resources, Especially Technical Roles

Although vehicle consumption has not yet surged, businesses are still making long-term investments. Service workshops, maintenance centers, and assembly plants continue to expand in preparation for the next growth cycle. This, in turn, drives strong recruitment demand in positions such as:

  • Repair and maintenance technicians with strong skills in automotive electrical and electronic systems, especially for newer vehicle models.

  • Diagnostic technicians capable of reading fault codes, analyzing wiring diagrams, and mastering modern diagnostic equipment.

  • Production, assembly, and quality inspection personnel as manufacturers aim to increase localization rates.

  • Professional sales consultants with strong market understanding and the ability to quickly adapt to new policies.

Notably, the rapid shift toward electric and hybrid vehicles is also creating strong demand for professionals knowledgeable in batteries, motors, and energy management systems—fields currently facing a significant talent shortage.
